Welder and procedure qualification for the CWI

Welder qualification proves the person can lay down sound weld metal; procedure qualification proves the recipe works. The CWI tests both, plus the codes that set the rules, with at least 28% of Part B and 25% of Part C on this area (AWS B5.1:2025, Table 8.1, checked October 2026).

4.1.1Three layers: rulebook, recipe, person

Part A has no minimum for qualification in B5.1:2025, so any Part A share you see for it is an estimate. The AWS CWI page still lists WPS and PQR among Part A topics, so expect it there as well.

The rulebook

A contract names the governing documents, and the inspector works to those, edition and all. Inside them, shall is mandatory and should is a recommendation. That one-word difference decides plenty of Part C answers. For Part C you pick one code at application and keep it, including on a retest (AWS CWI Examination User Guide, September 2026, checked October 2026); the options are on the Part C code book page.

The recipe

A WPS is the written instruction. Under D1.1 it's either prequalified (it meets the Clause 5 rules, no test needed) or qualified by test under Clause 6, with the test results kept on a PQR. The WPS vs PQR page untangles the two documents.

Prequalified status has edges. Step outside the Clause 5 limits on joint detail, base metal, filler metal or process and the WPS needs a PQR behind it. D1.1:2025 also dropped the AWS A5.36 filler metal classifications, so a filler that was routine under one edition can need a closer look under the other.

The person

Welders and welding operators qualify by testing to a WPS. Plate grooves are coded 1G through 4G and fillets 1F through 4F, with 5G and 6G on pipe; the positions on a welder's test record frame the production work. The coupon is judged visually and then by the tests on the destructive testing page or the code's alternative.

Where Part B fits

Part B's qualification questions are answered from the Book of Specifications that AWS supplies at the session, not from your Part C code (AWS CWI Examination User Guide, September 2026, checked October 2026). Same ideas, different book: practice finding a welder's range in an unfamiliar document as well as in the one you know.

Which AWS document sets the classifications for carbon steel covered (stick) electrodes?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A QC1 is the spec for certifying welding inspectors, not filler metal.
    2. B B2.1 covers procedure and performance qualification, not electrode classification.
    3. C Correct: A5.1 is the AWS filler metal spec for carbon steel covered electrodes. It sets classifications like E7018.
    4. D D1.1 is the structural steel code. It points to matching fillers but doesn't classify electrodes.

Between qualification tests, how does a welder keep a performance qualification in effect?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Codes don't keep a welder qualified through written exams. Welder qualification is a hands-on test, and continuity comes from welding.
    2. B The WPS controls how the weld is made, not whether the welder stays qualified. You can follow a good WPS and still have lapsed.
    3. C Correct: Under D1.1 and ASME IX, a welder stays qualified as long as the qualified process is used without a gap longer than the code allows.
    4. D Continuity is tied to the process you qualified in. Hours in a different process don't keep that qualification alive.

While reviewing a welding specification, the welding inspector finds that the document is labeled as "AWS D1.1". What category of welding does this AWS code refer to?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Hot tapping belongs to pipeline and pressure work, not D1.1.
    2. B Filler metals and shielding gases have their own A5-series specs.
    3. C Correct: AWS D1.1 is the Structural Welding Code, Steel.
    4. D D1.1 covers steel structures in general, tubulars included. It isn't an electroslag code.

What is the correct term for a written document that provides advisory information?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A A regulation is issued by a government body and carries legal force. It isn't advisory.
    2. B A requirement is mandatory by definition, the opposite of advisory.
    3. C Correct: A guideline, or guide, gives advice and recommended practice without mandatory language.
    4. D A standard is written with mandatory "shall" language and binds the job once a contract invokes it. It isn't merely advisory.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  5. Tag 05

What is the correct term for a written document that establishes uniform methods?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A A protocol is a procedure or etiquette. It isn't the standards-body term.
    2. B A guideline gives advice but doesn't set uniform methods anyone has to follow.
    3. C Instructions tell someone how to do a task. They aren't a published standard.
    4. D Correct: A standard is a published document that sets uniform methods. It turns mandatory when a contract or code invokes it.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  6. Tag 06

What is the proper term for a documented set of required practices?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A A reference is something you look things up in. It doesn't set required practice.
    2. B A manual explains how to do something. It isn't the term for required practices.
    3. C Correct: A code is a set of required practices. It uses 'shall' and binds once a jurisdiction or contract adopts it.
    4. D A guide is advisory. It uses 'should' and isn't binding.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  7. Tag 07

A welder completed a qualification test using an F2 electrode to ensure compliance for a structural steel project. Which F-number electrodes are permissible for use in production welds for this project?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Backwards. A test with a lower group doesn't cover the harder-to-run higher groups like low-hydrogen F4.
    2. B There's no 'F2X' class of filler metal. It's a made-up option.
    3. C Correct: Electrode groups qualify downward. Passing with F2 covers F2 and the lower group, but not higher groups like F3 or F4.
    4. D Too narrow. A test with one group covers that group and the ones below it.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  8. Tag 08

Welder performance qualification usually lets you radiograph the test coupon in place of the bend tests. For which process is that substitution not allowed?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Spray transfer is a high-energy mode with good fusion. Codes accept radiography in place of bend tests for it.
    2. B Pulsed transfer isn't the mode the codes single out. Radiography can stand in for the bends.
    3. C Globular transfer isn't excluded either. The exception is written for the one mode prone to cold lap and sidewall lack of fusion.
    4. D Correct: Short-circuit GMAW (GMAW-S) can leave thin, tight lack of fusion that film may miss, so D1.1 and ASME IX keep bend tests for it.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  9. Tag 09

A welder's performance qualification covers the flat position only. The next job uses the same process and filler metal, but the joints are vertical, and the WPS already covers vertical. What's needed before the welder starts?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Position is an essential variable for the welder. A flat-only test doesn't extend to vertical work.
    2. B The PQR qualifies the procedure, not the welder. A new procedure record doesn't qualify this welder for vertical.
    3. C Correct: Position is an essential variable for welder qualification, so the welder needs a test that covers the vertical position before production.
    4. D Past experience isn't qualification. The code wants a passed test covering the position, on record for the welder.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  10. Tag 10

Which term describes the document that specifies required material properties and characteristics?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A A manual tells you how to do or run something. It doesn't set material requirements.
    2. B A guide is advisory and doesn't set required properties.
    3. C An inspection report records findings. It doesn't define material properties.
    4. D Correct: A specification sets the required properties and characteristics of a material or product, like the A5 filler metal specs.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  11. Tag 11

Which change in essential variables would require immediate requalification of a welder?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Travel speed isn't a welder qualification variable. Small tweaks don't trigger a retest.
    2. B Staying inside the qualified position range keeps the welder qualified.
    3. C Gas flow rate isn't a welder qualification variable.
    4. D Correct: Changing the welding process is an essential variable for the welder. Qualified on SMAW doesn't mean qualified on GMAW.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  12. Tag 12

What is the most important factor to verify before allowing a welder to perform production welding?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Correct: Before any production weld, check the welder holds a current qualification covering the process, position and thickness.
    2. B Equipment is a supervisor's concern. It doesn't make the welder qualified.
    3. C Material matters, but what you verify is the welder's qualified range, not the material on its own.
    4. D Scheduling has nothing to do with whether the welder may weld.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  13. Tag 13

What is the correct term for the complete documentation of a welder's qualification testing?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Mixes up the two. A procedure's test record is the PQR; a welder's is the performance qualification record.
    2. B Correct: The welder performance qualification record documents the welder's test and what it qualifies. D1.1 calls its form a WQTR.
    3. C Not the defined name. Welding operators (machine or automatic welding) are qualified on a performance record too.
    4. D The PQR records a procedure test, not a welder's test.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  14. Tag 14

What is required when a welder changes from one thickness range to another?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A Scheduling doesn't touch qualification.
    2. B Correct: Check that the welder's qualified thickness range covers the new work. If it doesn't, the welder needs a new test.
    3. C Equipment isn't the issue. The question is whether the welder is qualified for that thickness.
    4. D PPE is always required, but it doesn't qualify anyone for a new thickness.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

  15. Tag 15

What is the first step a welder should take before starting production welding?

    Remarks on every option
    1. A You can't know which electrodes are right until you've read the WPS.
    2. B Cleaning matters, but the WPS tells you what prep and cleaning the joint needs.
    3. C Correct: The WPS sets process, filler, settings, preheat and technique. Read it first; everything else follows from it.
    4. D Settings come from the WPS. Tune the machine once you know the range.

Pick an option. The remarks on all 4 open here.

4.1.4Welder qualification FAQ

Can a CWI qualify welders?

Yes. A CWI may inspect and may certify welder qualifications (AWS QC1:2016-AMD1, clause 4, checked October 2026); a CAWI works only under a CWI's or SCWI's supervision. AWS also offers Welder Performance Qualifier and Welding Procedure Qualifier endorsements (AWS CWI page, checked October 2026). The limits of the role are on inspector duties.

What separates a welder from a welding operator?

A welder manipulates the torch or electrode by hand or semiautomatically. A welding operator sets up and runs mechanized or automatic equipment. Codes qualify the two separately, and their test records cover different variables.

Is ASME Section IX accepted for Part C?

Yes, as a set: ASME BPVC Section IX (2023) with B31.1 and B31.3 (both 2024) (AWS Exam References and Editions Guide, August 2025, checked October 2026). Section IX is the ASME book on qualifying welding procedures, welders and welding operators.

Which code should I study for qualification questions?

The one you'll pick for Part C. D1.1 is the code bundled with the AWS seminars, and API 1104 is the other common choice for pipeline work. A failed Part C is retaken on the same code (AWS CWI Examination User Guide, September 2026, checked October 2026).
